From ArtistsNetwork.TV: Working from life, Chris Saper shows you how to position your model, control the lighting, and sketch a compelling portrait in oils—using only black, white, and gray. Avoiding the complexities of color and focusing only on values, she helps you concentrate on the most difficult task: achieving a likeness. Watch Saper as she demonstrates, step by step, how to create a portrait, using only darks and lights, a portrait that will take your breath away! See the whole video at http://www.ArtistsNetwork.TV

  • She hasn't finished yet; you start off blocky, which is why she looks older in the painting. When the painting is finished, she will probably look much younger than what you see here.

  • I would have to say that I'd like to see more contrast, as it is a monochromatic scheme... though perhaps she adds that later on?

Also, the blocky-ness gives the artist a general idea of the dimensions of the face as opposed to diving head-on into a detailed and natural shading type. This way she can see the angle of the head in relation to the placement of the features to best judge if she has captured a rough likeness to the subject.

Clearly 'MARMARR1' doesn't know much about art.
