Divers who raised a wreck from Skaha Lake Sunday were startled to find a skull and a leg bone inside the rusted hulk of the '60s-era car.

The local RCMP detachment is now reviewing its missing persons files to solve the macabre mystery of who was in the car.

The car was found below a rock bluff next to a scenic lookout on Highway 97, about four kilometres south of Penticton.

RCMP Sgt. Rick Dellebuur said a forensic probe is underway, but the bone fragments appear to be from an adult.

Investigators are certain the car is a Chrysler, but are still trying to determine the vehicle's year and model, he added.

"It's just in such rough shape that we can't tell," said Dellebuur. There were no licence plates on the car.

Dellebuur said "old-timers" in the Okanagan have told police that the section of Highway 97 above the lake was less safe four decades ago.

It wasn't uncommon for cars back then to fail to negotiate the highway's downhill curve and plunge into the lake below.

  • JIMMY HOFFA ! ?

  • It's so weird to lose someone and suddenly that someone get found after so many years in a sexy early 60's submerged Chrysler.

Imagine how many things happened since then,so much action, the 70's,the 80's,the disco, new wave, births, the sunshine miami beach in the mid 80's...

And all those things got missed by that someone cause when all those things were happening he/she was rotting on the bottom of that river.

I just don't feel right for this.

  • Too bad that new Yorker won't be restored the person couldve lost control in a bad storm and drove off the cliff they saw only one person was found so there's no sign of foul play inside of car where the person made her drive off or she commit suicide but there's a 75% chance a bad storm and nobody knew where she went a mystery maybe some evidence from the past a missing woman claims to be this woman in this lake

  • @Darkfloyd73

Wow that is pretty interesting that it might be a 64 4 door Chrysler New Yorker. I hope that they can bring more new about this car.

  • Chris Brown reports...

  • A 1964 4 door Chrysler New Yorker. i can tell by the body lines and the C pliiar and trim. ive been around alot of them and took part in restoring one. back then alot of roads like that believe it or not did not have crash barriers. she could have been driving along in a storm and lost control of the vechile and wrecked itno the lake?? or she could have been driven off of the road by somebody?? maybe foul play?? the licens plates might have rusted off overtime. after hitting the water??

  • That looks like a trailer park supervisors car.

  • @johncartelli No. She said that maybe even if the number plate WAS missing, that they could still check the VIN and find a name - who knows. Not a quote, but there never was mention that the plate was actually missing.

  • @OsbornTramain It must hav gone to close fell and rolled into the lake and floated away and sank.

  • you know, they say it's hard to identify the car as it's a Chrysler....but as soon as I saw the car, I knew it was a 63 or 64 Chrysler, they only had that style two years. and yes, you can see the tail lights and it's definitely a 64, either a New Yorker or a Windsor. I guess I'm stating the obvious, but clearly it crashed, looks like a front end into something and then landing on the roof...it's a hardtop body style so it would easily crush.

  • @inkey2 Bit late for an answer, but she's a '64. Those loopy taillites. ('63's were round.)
