Today former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian began to serve his 19 year jail sentence. He was found guilty on charges related to bribery and corruption last month.

Former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian was transferred to Taipei Prison on Thursday to serve his 19-year sentence for graft.

Chen served as president for two terms. He was convicted for charges related to bribery and corruption last month together with his wife, Wu Shu-chen.

Police tightened security as dozens of supporters gathered outside the Tucheng Detention Center at the time of his transfer, waving banners and chanting slogans.

Chen's son, Chen Chih-chung, who was recently elected as a councilor of Taiwan's southern city of Kaohsiung, visited his father and spoke to supporters.

[Chen Chih-Chung, Chen Shui-bian's Son]:
"My father is feeling peaceful now. He is calm in the face of what's coming next. As he said before, he will wait in the dark, remaining hopeful in the midst of humiliation, and he will remain healthy. He also asked me to thank everyone who cares about him, and all the comrades who have shown warmth and support. He is very thankful, and very touched."

Chen said his father was concerned over the health of the former first lady Wu Shu-chen, who is also due to be transferred to jail for money laundering charges.

Prosecutors charged Chen with embezzling nearly $3.2 million and accepting bribes of about $9 million.

Chen says the charges were politically motivated and denied any wrongdoing.

During his terms of office between 2000-2008, Chen upset Beijing and the United States by advocating formal independence from China.
