Eduardo Bianco mit seinem argentinischen Tango-Orchester mit Refraingesang: M. Visconti Duelo Criollo (Creole Duel) Tango fantasia (Razzano), Grammophon 1939 (German pressing)

NOTE: Creole honor was a delicate thing, easily offended, and countless duels were fought over women, perceived insults, and differing opinions, or just because. Duels were fought with pistols, sabers, knives, colichemardes (a long sword) and even poison pills.

Composer of this tango José Francisco RAZZANO was born in Montevideo, capital of the República Oriental del Uruguay. He was only two years old when, after his father's death, his mother moved to Buenos Aires. Young José started his career as a singer and his fame gave origin to his first contract to record discs for the "Victor" company between 1911 and 1912. Soon he, together with another rising star of the Argentine tango Carlos Gardel, created a famous vocal duo Gardel -Razzano. Razzano had a splendid tenor voice, of perfect intonation, that blended perfectly with Gardel's range. Gardel-Razzano duet was outstanding. Only at their personal presentations, that the records never evidenced with the then poor technical recording conditions, the true value of their interpretations could be appreciated. Gardel-Razzano's success and popularity had no limits. They worked intensively. They travelled to Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Spain until, reaching 1925, Razzano, with his vocal cords seriously damaged, had to take a pause. He kept on with his work as a kind of private secretary and agent of his partner and friend and helping him in the selection of the repertoire. Around 1928, José Razzano attempted to take up his artistic activity but those recordings did not have much impact. Again in 1932 he made some recording takes, that would be the last ones. He gave up singing and focused on composing and promoting other artists careers, as his relationship with Gardel ceased, in spite of the fact that the presence of Razzano near Gardel, represented an image of order, of a homely warmth he generously gave to his friend, contributing for his artistic career with the advise and his opinion about the places where to perform. In spite of personal differences, somebody heard Gardel saying in his last tour of Venezuela and Colombia, before appearing at a very open space: «Pepe would not have allowed my performance here». José Razzano died in Buenos Aires on April 30, 1960

  • The very essence of "swashbuckling."

  • Hi B., dash, what is "swashbuckling"? Have mercy on my Yinglisch, pleeeze...

  • A hot tango and fine pictures of passionate dancers and duelers.

  • Thanks D., preparing this clip was one more little lesson of international habits and cultures again. Heve you ever heard about the "Creole Duel"? - that kind of a men's fight we have seen so often in American movies (especially, when the action was located somewhere in New Orleans area in XIX/XXcenturies) - when they both hold knives or short sabers in one hand and second hand & forearm is wrapped into a thick felt or another such stuff?

  • Hi Grzegorz - the orchestration is marvellous - vocals as well. Frames 3:05 and 3:11 - fabulous! Thanks!!!

  • Hi Lana, yes, that must be a PERFECT tune for the argentine tango training! I regret I allowed to go off my body's memory so many of tango figures and tricks I used to be quite good in, when I was slimer (and younger, naturellement)

  • No tienen nada original señores uruguayos?

  • A "swashbuckler" is a dare devil, someone who strikes or flourishes his shield. Mercy on your Plinglish; it's a hell of a lot better than my Polski, Francais, Italiano, etc.

  • Never heard of it, though I must have seen it in films -- the image seems vaguely familiar. Strangely, about three years ago while searching for a project (never before mentioned :)) I bumped into another duel form which I had not heard of before: the "mensur". It was popular in the 19th century among fraternities in Germany and Austria (and to some degree in Poland).
