The riff is only one note off. They're both blues songs and use the blues scale, so yes, of course they sound similar. And yes, the blues is cool.

just listened to Mike's version of get what you deserve (one of my fav DTB songs) and it was mindblowingly great~ loved it

and the slide guitar sounds so dereky~ but with it's own twists of course

If you listen to a few different performances of "Get Out of My Life," it should be pretty apparent that Trucks usually takes that first solo in much the same manner as he does here, lying back, being economic but expressive with relatively few notes. I don't see any way that he could be accused of shortchanging himself on this particular night for the sake of this (excellent) guitarist's ego.
