Doc Severinson and the Tonight Show Band plays a great version of the classic Sing Sing Sing. Not sure when this is from, late 80's I'm guessing, but a woman apparently wrote in to Johnny complaining that the band isn't featured enough on air. He brought her on the show and sat her right in front of the band for this song. A classy move by one the last class acts on television, and of course one of the sickest big bands ever assembled!!

  • Definitely don't make them like they used to. The old lady was a fan who wrote into Carson complaining that they don't show the band enough. She was on the set when they came back from commercial and he talked to her a few minutes before bringing her over. He was telling her that the band plays for the studio audience the whole commercial break but the folks at home don't get to see that, so he flew her to the show to enjoy the band. Johnny was the man!!

  • Only Doc Severinson could pull off a green suit!

  • @TtownJim

Look on ebay.com for "The Tonight Show Band", no DVD's but there are CD's and vinyl. :-)

  • Look, kids...let's play nice! This type of argumentation is akin to arguing about who's richer--Gates or Buffett. It doesn't matter! ANY of the bands mentioned are far beyond our mortal selves for any of a number of reasons. Enjoy the performance, politely applaud, cheer, smile and go on about your doings. And, don't make me come back here!

  • @KentuckyJet I don't doubt for a minute that the Basie and Bennett albums are great. I like Tony Bennett but he's no Sinatra especially at that point in time "mid 60's" when in my opinion Frank was at his best. I'm sorry that Basie Sinatra live at the Sands has no equal.

  • @CHC4669 Bennett and Basie is far better! They made two albums together and bot tops the one one you refer to.

  • What passion, it doesn't make a difference which band. That's irrelevant. Thet played with everything

  • @steven4570 it's all a matter of opinion anyways..and it's certainly a valid opinion to think of these guys as the best!

  • snookie...snooka-luke!

  • "They couldn't carry Basie's Band music stands or clean their instruments."

A statement like that and some of the others give you ZERO credibility. And I AM quite familiar with that Sands concert, so no lectures please.

  • @steven4570 That's fine you're entitled to your own opinion I can respect that. If enjoy them and think they rank among the there's nothing wrong with that. I enjoy the band also when they're given a chance to shine. BUT in No Way Shape or Form are they amongst the top of Big Bands. As I said before if you want to hear what the greatest band ever sounds like listen to Count Basie Frank Sinatra live at the Sands 1966. They could Never Ever play with that kind of Feeling, Soul, and Dynamics. NEVER
