This is indeed an old song, check out When I Was A Cowboy volumes 1 and 2 on Yazoo Records; 1920s and '30s singers doing cowboy songs, many of whom actually did work on the trail. It was also recorded by a singer known as Powder River Jack.
TVZ certainly has enough of a modern cowboy feel here, however. Thanks for posting!
