The great Elia Kazan directed the classic drama "Splendor In The Grass" (1961).
The story by playwright William Inge is set in the Kansas of the late 1920's, early 1930's. Rich Bud Stamper (a fantastic debut for Warren Beatty) and butcher's daughter Wilma Dean (Deanie) Loomis are the couple envied by all the students at the local high school. But both have to deal with overbearing parents: Mrs. Loomis (Audrey Christie) who wants Deanie to be a "good girl" and Ace Stamper (Pat Hingle), a self made oil millionaire, who wants his son to follow into his footsteps even if Bud really wants to become a farmer. His son is Ace's only hope, since his daughter Ginny (Barbara Loden) is a stereotypical "bad girl": a Paris Hilton of her day, a rich girl who just wants to party.
Here are a few more scenes from "Splendor In The Grass". Ace Stamper (Pat Hingle) continues to burden his good, sensitive, son Bud Stamper (Warren Beatty) with the responsibility over his rebellious older sister Ginny Stamper (Barbara Loden). When Ginny loses control at a New Years celebration, Bud ends up fighting for her honor, at the same time releasing his frustrations over his relationship with Deanie (Natalie Wood) resulting in their break-up.

  • Barbara Loden, along with Natalie Wood, gave the best performance in this film. Ginny is so tragic, such a lost little girl who seeks attention from other men because she gets no love from her father. Bud suffers from intense pressure, but Ginny has it rough in a different way. I think the film is also about parental pressure and oppression. Deanie, Bud and Ginny are prime examples of that.

  • Barbara Loden, is the actress playing Warren Beatty's sister. She was married to director Elia Kazan at the time.

  • brilliant scene

  • @jsbach15 @etrax2000 Barbara Loden was married to Elia Kazan from 1968 until her death in 1980 at the age of 48.

She was marvelous as Ginny. She was 29 at that time.

  • @jsbach15 FIRST THAT I KNEW OF THAT, she was good, but a bit too old to be playing a gir of about 21
