According to the owner, This pre-dates the 911R factory built racers. This is one of around 5 that were built and the only one known to exist. Barn hunters, there's 4 more out there...

  • There were 4 prototypes built, designated R1, R2, R3 and R4. R3 and R4 are well known and seen regularly - sorry barn hunters. This car could be R1 (chassis 305876) but several details are wrong - deck lid/single coil/no side oil filler. More likely an 'S'. Beautiful car though.

  • Interesting info. It contradicts the information the gentleman representing this car at Amelia Island was producing. Can you give any reference or links to back up your statement?

    -Thanks

    Chris

  • I can certainly point you to a number of magazines (Porsche Panorama - Mar 07/27, GT Purely Porsche - Feb 05, Classic Car (UK) - Dec 05, 911&Porsche World - Jul 07) and I recall that Ernie Wilberg had quite a good resource on PBase (Google Ernie).

If you post a sacrificial email address I can send you quite a bit of stuff on the protos.

It's worth noting that the protos differed from the production models, with R4 being closest to production. Chassis # is definitive with the protos.

  • Thank you for the references. I enjoy seeking/finding the definitive history on these cars.

  • There were approx. 22 911R's made.

  • My research show's 26 911R's (we're close). As shown in this video, of the prototypes that pre-date the 911R there were apx. 5 known to exist...

  • Saw this car on the trailer at Monterey...favorite car at the event!

  • Saw this car on the trailer at the Monterey Historics, i kept going back and looking at it.

  • I'm not sure how many still are around, but i'm almost 100% positive that only 22 were made. But 22 or 26....They're rare. Haha.

  • Can you upload it to Youtube and post a video reply to this video? I'd like to hear it running.
