Shan Yu indeed represents a rare breed as a Disney villain. He's not funny, stylistic, foppish, absurdly narcissistic, or quirky. He's cold, ruthless, sadistic, & most dangerous of all... damn efficient at what he does. Maleficent & the Horned King were scary given their supernatural abilities, but Shan Yu (like Frollo) is frightening because there's something so real about his evil.
Most Disney villains at worst, hurt people as part of a scheme. Shan Yu slaughtered a village because he could.

Anyone else notice that Shan Yu is the only person in the film who doesn't give Mulan crap for being a girl? He never speaks to her derisively, and tries to kill her with the same seriousness he gives all his male opponents.
