  • Here's what each piece paints in my mind:

    First: A train that loses control and at the end, crashes.

    Second: The castle of a noble.

    Third: A boat lost on a very stormy sea.

  • too bad the sound quality isn't the best.

  • The second iteration of 39/1 is even better than the first, despite the poorer sound quality of this version. Hillmann has such superb technical control and such measured, precise understanding of the etude that he makes it seem easier than it is. He is one of my favorite Rachmaninoff interpreters.

  • I've always considered the first etude he plays, Rachmaninoff's very own "Flight of the Bumblebee". :)
