The Bold (Beaux) Gendarmes sung by Josef Locke

Words vary:

We're public guardians, bold but wary,
And of ourselves, we take good care,
To risk our precious lives, we're chary,
When danger looms, we're never there
But when we meet some helpless woman,
Or little boys that do no harm

Chorus:
We run them in, We run them in,
We run them in, We run them in,
We show them, we're the bold gendarmes,
We run them in, We run them in,
We run them in, We run them in,
We show them, we're the bold gendarmes!

Sometimes our duty's extra mural,
And butterflies we love to chase
We like to gambol in things rural,
Commune with nature, face to face,
But to our beats then back returning,
Refreshed by nature's holy charms,
(Chorus)

If gentlemen will make a riot
And punch each other's heads at night
We're quite disposed to keep it quiet,
Provided that they make it right,
But if they do not see it
And give us our proper terms,
(Chorus)

  • @johnnym19591 He was billed as "The singing Irish Policeman" in his early days.

  • I probably knew him more than most, Yes he was good singer. I was on a show with him in 1949 in Blackpool. He always had an eye for the chorus girls. On the show 'Coconut Grove' he sang a duet with Julie Andrews (who at the time was about 14). He had a bad failing though..............., he used to beat up his wife, sometimes in front of his mates. Still, he was a good singer. so we should'nt hold that against him, should we?

  • Born Creggan Terrace Londonderry, Locke served with the Irish Guards, Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Palestine Police.

  • @johnnym19591 Actually he was in the Dublin police,so it would have been the Garda Siochana, not the RUC which was the police for Northern Ireland, the six north eastern counties as they called it in Eire. The 1930s would of course be after partition of the country.

  • run em in lol *****

  • Go KGSC

  • don't care about the politics, brilliant stuff!!!
