@zaoregel1 actually they said "in the era before the avatar, we did not bend the elements, but the energy within ourselves. to bend one's energy, your own energy must be unbendable or you will be corrupted and destroyed." there is no proof they created the avatar.

@BCSpore maybe the first avatar was created by spirits when the bending arts were discovered by humans. i remember the episode where the gang got trapped in a cave, the two lovers were supposedly said to be the first earthbenders and on the sun warriors episode, the sun warriors discovered firebending from the dragons so im pretty sure the bending arts weren't already available right when the avatar world started
