Hoşap castle, impressively built on a rock outcropping, was built by a Kurdish ruler in the 17th Century. The modern Iranian border is only a few miles away, and cheap gas prices in Iran have created a cottage industry where Turkish truck drivers smuggle Iranian gas into Turkey. Ancient Urartian ruins can be seen on the nearby hills.

  • Kurds, who have lived there for centuries, as have Armenians and Turks, "dont belong in the region"? Such attitudes only perpetuate the ugliness that has been created and exploited for selfish purposes.
