In South Africa we have close on eleven thousand cleft births a year. 1 in 400 births. We're lucky enough that a wonderful man who was our best president ever to grace this country, Nelson Mandela, started the Smile Foundation here. Now every child rich or poor will have their cleft repaired within the first year of their birth. My daughter had a unilateral cleft lip and cleft of the hard and soft palate. I do not know how I would have survived in a country where we could not afford the repair.
