  • By virtue if simply being soaking wet, even fat pine shavings won't start. On the flip side, a piece of fat pine stick is not going to soak up any water. Just shave and use. Why do people in general feel the need to take the extreme test approach? Keep it simple and you will have a fire.

  • @Southernherbalist Yea the interesting thing I was looking at was since Maya shavings have so much sap in them I really wondered if it would be enough to repel moisture when soaked underwater and still light by spark after being brought out. When your in the extremes you need to know what your equipment can and cannot do and that can only be done by testing.

  • use some magnesium flakes on the wet maya dust. that is what it has been made for :-)

  • @DrummingSentinel Yea you can start that so easy with the shavings. It was more of an experiment I was conducting.

  • Was there a reason that you didn't use the magnesium shavings to help you start the tinder? I think if you tried that with some shavings you would reduce your starting time to a strike or two instead of several minutes.

  • @ThetaGen Yea you can start that so easy with the shavings. It was more of an experiment I was conducting.

  • what rocks are those at 4:00

  • Seriously man: "When your in the extremes you need to know what your equipment can and cannot do and that can only be done by testing." ??? I think that if your equipment has been immersed under water for a week, the climatic conditions would be so incredibly fucking ultra-extreme, that you'll be pretty dead yourself too, for like 5 or 6 days already....

  • Keep on truckin

  • @georgelopezlover1 the dry sets off easy. I just happened to try this test when it was dang cold out so I was shaking pretty good. Would be a good idea for anyone who uses these to try it when their hands are red from the cold it isn't has easy as it looks.

  • @guns4toys good question.. never thought of trying that.

  • @Zebra323844555 works like the rest. the key is the striker

  • @rzahar marketing only.

  • @ericvault wouldn't have made a difference. you'll just need dry material unless you use magnesium

  • no ofeense but y couldnt u even do the dry maya dust very well? is it because of the china made? i jsut oredered a huge ferro rod and i wanna know if it will take this long to light things, plz reply

  • Good test. What would happen if you soaked a stick of fatwood in water and then flung off excess water and made fresh maya dust? In stick form the pine resin might protect the wood from the moisture, or at least prevent it from soaking in too deep.

  • I also got a Coleman Magnesium Firestarter but its says its made in U.S.A

  • Hy :) ... Lots of firestarters just made sparks but the sparks are not 3000 C like the original... and of course is much hard or imposible to light something... I recomand light my fire firestarter because I know they have the original and really make 3000 C sparks :) .... Good Luck ! :)

  • dude you need a better fire starter would have been better test

  • @bwbucky92 Yes but that misses the point of this video.

  • Don't the firestarter tools work better if you shave magnesium pieces for it to catch onto when you shave the sparks off of it?

  • @0122358 Yes I use Rust-Oleum Specialty Camouflage Spray

  • did you paint over your tinder container with OD paint?

  • Yea very good dry tender and cheap. I prefer cotton balls myself. The objective I was after was working with soaking wet maya dust since no one seemed to have done that video yet.

  • i agree not every thing is wet. . . ever. and just as you showed how well maya dust burns with a lighter. i use dryer lint with my maya dust. the lint takes a spark super fast which turns to a flame and lights the maya dust. so thats just how i carry it!
