"Bacteria" by Taylor Project, from "Life, Death, Prizes" (2011). Animation by Andrew Bonnici.
The song "Bacteria" was inspired by the 1970s cult anthology "Wisconsin Death Trip".
The infectious disease diphtheria, which has the particular distinction of mainly killing children under 5, features regularly in the book. It killed tens of thousands of children every year at the time of the "Wisconsin Death Trip" subject matter (the 1890s).The particular inspiration for the song is a piece that reads:
"The little child of Newton and Etta Riggs Loomis was removed to the home of its grandparents, Mr and Mrs J.C. Loomis, after diphtheria was pronounced to be in the home of Mrs Ann Riggs, in the hopes that it might escape the dread disease. But the monster followed it and the child died, Monday, aged 2 years".
"Bacteria" is about imagining the unsaid parts behind this grim story, one of many thousands like it. It is about the indifferent violence of nature, which is neither good nor bad but only constant and driving. As Darwin knew, nature is much darker than any religion you can dream up. Viewed biologically, life is a strange, dark, amazing epic that we all feature in helplessly. The song is about the struggle for survival, not only by people but by all life right down to microscopic bacteria. Their objective isn't necessarily to kills us -- but they run on the unknown knowledge that they want to live and reproduce themselves, even if it means killing us. "The sadness of biology has followed us for centuries, it knows the way, it knows no other way".
