Philadelphia Orchestra members formed this group on a Pennsylvania tour in 1981. Our quartet lasted about 4 years. We attended the international barbershop convention in Pittsburgh in 1982. This performance was among our last concerts - 1984 at the Academy of Music (Philadelphia).

In the quartet: Roger Blackburn, Joseph Alessi, Glenn Dodson, Charles Vernon

  • Ater 34 years in the Philadelphia Orchestra (2008), the years I performed with this quartet were my favorite. We were true ambassadors for the orchestra as we performed voluntarily for fund raising projects such as the Radiothons and various orchestra-related banquets. My biggest regret is that we never had a reunion. Now it is too late as we lost Glenn Dodson Easter weekend of 2007. I hope to post more clips like this very soon!

  • Fantastic!

  • i'm playing trombone studies by alessi, dodson and vernon... and now i just found that video! great... ;D

  • @JubbaDaTrombone It seems to be a Db7, and the coda is in F. The progression sounds like Bb, Bbm, F, Db7. At least it works when I play those chords along with them!

  • well, it's essentially an Eb7, but I'm trying to get the progression smoothed out in my own mind.

I'm working my sleepy brain to figger it out, Jubba, but you do some theory homework too, OK? Does the phrase "augmented VI chord" sound familiar?

  • I love the chord at 4:14. Anybody know what it is?

  • Vernon isn't exactly excelling in the hair category either, lol.

  • Sure looks a lot different now. Now he has just about no hair. I've never seen him with a beard, more or less with a full head of hair. As for the ensemble this is quite the all star lineup!

  • Amazing. Amazing. Absolutely incredible. Such great players. And great singers! :-)

  • Lol, I couldn't figure out which one was Alessi until they started playing because of the beard.
