Quick tutorial on how to create joints in Toon Boom Studio 4.5.

1. Create a simple stickman in Drawing mode

2. Cut & paste the important body parts into new drawings (in Drawing mode), then nested (click & drag) the layers with each other.

3. Use the rotate tool (in Camera mode) to adjust the rotation point.

4. Use the rotate tool with timeline to create tweened animations using keyframes.

  • I have a problem nesting images. when I import a photoshop file with my layers separated and try to nest them, the one nested becomes really small. is there a way to nest them without this unwanted size change??

  • @07gdo I can't test that out to see what's happening. Try convert each layer to a vector inside TB (right-click > convert to vector) then try again.

  • is there anny way do some easing in the parts you animate?

  • @MovieLordMarty To ease, select the frame, then click Function Editor tab above Timeline. Select the keyframe (red square) then choose Velocity from drop-down box, click bend shape to the right of that. Now move the green handle to smooth the line.

  • when I try and nest by clicking and dragging, it only moves the layer. it does not nest.

  • If you don't have version 4.5, then you'll have to Peg every layer, then nest the pegs.

  • This is so much easier than Animate Pro.

  • This video helped me allot as a newbie to Toon Boom Studio, it's not hard to do you just need to know how to do it :-)

  • i have a propblem can u help its that i cant put my vids on youtube

  • @bumtaksi you´re welcome. I had some problems like that not so much time ago. glad I could help :D

  • @07gdo yeah..for the first time after long time using..imade my charachter moving like this one on the video :))) thank you very much man!

  • @bumtaksi actually it´s pretty simple. if all the parts are separated, you just click on a layer and drag it above another. at 3:48, he´s nesting the left arm. so, he clicked on the layer of the lower part of the arm and dragged it above the layer with the top part. as you can see, a vertical line appears as a guide. when he relased the layer (at 3:51) the lower part became nested with the top. so, always the most important part of the body will be above the others. let me know if this helps.

  • @07gdo i use the toon boom studio 4.5 version...i sucessfully followed a video till 3:48..and i can't go further

  • @bumtaksi what happens instead? and what version are you using?

  • nonononononono...i can't make this.someone help me please..i followed all instructions and it doesn't fucking work!

  • @Marioiswicked there´s a very easy way to do that. nest everything you need. then go to the properties of the element you want to be in front (in this case, the arm) and change a little its "z" offset. I would say 0,1. if you change too much (1 or more), the arm will look much bigger. but the order of the layers should remain the same (the body above and the attached arm below). hope that helps.
