The Inspiring Volunteering Awards recognise and reward some of the outstanding volunteers that make Edinburgh a better place to live and work.
All nominated volunteers received an Inspiring Volunteering certificate and 50 nominees were invited to come and collect these at a special awards ceremony at the City Chambers -- one of whom The Lord Provost of Edinburgh presented with a very special award, the 'Inspiring Volunteer of the Year' 2010.
This year, Elizabeth (Liz) Bisset, a touchstone figure in the Craigmillar community in Edinburgh for over 50 years, was named as the 'Inspiring Volunteer of the Year 2010'. Among Liz's other activities, she has been a Brownie and Guide 'Guide', is a past District Commissioner and Trustee of Girlguiding Edinburgh, and a Trustee of Richmond's Hope, a project for bereaved children.
Lord Provost Grubb, said: "There are thousands of dedicated and inspiring volunteers in Edinburgh selflessly giving up their own time to help and support others. These awards are a wonderful way of paying tribute to these often 'unsung' heroes, whose contribution to the wellbeing of our city's residents cannot be overstated. I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the award winners, and to Elizabeth Bisset in particular for her achievement as Inspiring Volunteer of the Year.
The award ceremony was organised by Volunteer Centre Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Compact Partnership as part of Volunteers' Week, the national celebration of volunteers and volunteering which takes place from 01 to 07 June each year.
Andrew Jackson, Chair of iGIVE said: "Volunteers give so much to society. Around a third of Edinburgh residents have given their time without pay to a charitable, religious or voluntary organisation or club in the last year. Volunteering is on the rise, and Volunteer Centre Edinburgh has seen a thirty percent increase in public enquiries compared to last year. The benefits are often mutual, and for many volunteers, they get as much and more out of what they put in. The 'Inspiring Volunteers of the Year 2010' awards were about recognising the hard work, commitment, energy and selflessness of Edinburgh's many volunteers, and rewarding just a few of the many who make such a positive difference for Edinburgh and its residents."
