@CSX2665 When you hear the squealing on straight track the trucks are doing whats known in the railroading community as fishing. You can't tell visually that the trucks are moving from side to side in motion but he can definitely hear it when the wheel flange hits and grinds against the rail head. Brakes being applied makes a totally different sound.

not really, the sound is caused by the flanges on the wheels binding on the rail as they go around on the sharp turn.

Could be, but I have heard trains in full emergency and not make that much noise.

It's not the brakes. Its the wheels binding going around this sharp curve.
