  • this is a very good version of drift away, as you said a classic, worse versions did better in the charts than muds???as i said bad promotion, try a little tenderness also should have done loads better than it did, cut across shorty i agree should have flopped, i hated it, it was too fast, something i think les actually said about it too, slow talking boy i liked, but i think for most people this was a little too different, maybe it should have just been an album track

  • I don't understand why this song was not a number one hit for them the world over. It's an all time rock soul classic. Thanks for putting this up on here! :-D

  • @fearlessmudfan "Try A Little Tenderness" was actually a small hit in Australia in 1977, where the band were virtually unknown except for "Tiger Feet" just scraping the Top 20 in 1974. It's a pity that Mud were never accepted as an international act in the same way that David Bowie, Sweet, KISS and Alice Cooper were.

  • Les sang Book of love,Why do fools was Brian Tatum and yes i have the film of it

  • Les left the band in January 1979 . The album As You Like It came out after he`d left the band - that`s why he only sings on 5 of the songs on that album. The single Fools/Book of Love also came out after he`d left the band so I guess he must have joined them on some TV programme to try and push the single. He wasnt the main lead singer on the single anyway. Drift Away was his last single whilst he was with the band.

  • it wasnt Les`s last single with Mud,RCA`S why do fools fall in love/book of love was 1979 there is a film on you tube of Les performing it.Was on As you like it album

  • @fearlessmudfan I thought their cover of "Slow Talking Boy" was their worst ever single, they should've just done "He's Gonna Step On You Again".

  • Great version.

  • In all fairness, as nice as this may be, its not exactly a tree-puller, its a worn out classic, and carries none of the wit and energy that made them. They'd run outta steam in all fairness and were starting to clutch at straws such as this. But forget that, just listen to the good stuff!!

  • Yes, it was issued on RCA. Should have been a hit because this song is a classic and is one of the best renditions I've heard.
