Fastest train: Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee flagging off Sealdah-New Delhi non-stop Duronto Express in Kolkata on Friday.


KOLKATA: Keeping her Railway Budget promise of introducing non-stop air-conditioned Duranto trains that would connect metropolitan cities within the shortest possible time, Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee flagged off the first Duranto Express between Sealdah and New Delhi here on Friday.

Projected to be the fastest train in the country, Duranto Express is scheduled to reach New Delhi from Sealdah in 16 hours 20 minutes — almost two hours ahead of the Rajdhani Express.

Calling the Duranto Express a new idea, a new theme, a new vision, Ms. Banerjee said the service in other metropolitan cities would begin soon. While the Duranto between Chennai and New Delhi will be flagged off on September 21, we cannot start the Mumbai-Howrah service right now as the Assembly elections are coming up in Maharashtra. Preparations for starting another Duranto from Bangalore are on the way, she said.

hey dudes, stop all the debate about human life's worth and all. You get what you pay for. In India, you only need Rs.12 for a distance that costs Rs. 500 in Japan (50km)!!! Pour money into railways and they will improve. I personally don't want India to turn into a air-travel-focused country

@EsotericDesi : For ur kind information.. our present Railway Minister Smt. Mamta Banerjee have already announced few Bullet Trains for India.

But, it will take time to be launched as it it need special Tracks.

@therebellionwithin , the Trivandrum Rajdhani could have been upgraded to LHB rake, the present rakes are in poor condition , see the condition of Kerala express , it still runs on the age old rakes while the other imp trains are upgraded with the new and improved ones , Kerala is the longest running daily train in the country . come to TN , MAS -NDLS is another busy sector which has just two daily trains Tamil Nad and GT ,

@therebellionwithin : Sure might be , I am not supporting laloo here , I am just saying that bannerjee is no good , she spend crores for a railway museum , when that fund could have used wisely , take the state of Kerala and TN , There are only 3 daily trains from MAS to TVC out of which two are via Kerala and , this sector has a very heavy rush of passengers , atleast one daily train from MAS to TVC could have been put to clear the rush.

Your diatribe at Ms Banerjee is based on hype and not solid facts. 80% of the budget? Are you kidding me? These are not figures, just nice guesstimates from her opponents. Am from the south (AP) and have no particular affiliation with Ms Banerjee; but seriously we will tolerate a bafoon like Laloo just bcoz he is man and not a self made woman! Boo

@therebellionwithin : Banerjee is a no genius , this idea was proposed by Laloo, Mamta simply copied the same and brought it in action, Pls answer my question what did mamta do for south , 80% of the budget was favourable to the state of WB , ask to ur conscience , this is how a railway minister should be ?

@rajendranatha : Not every duronto is sucessful , on some routes it is full , whereas there are a lot of routes , where duronto had been on run for a while and were stopped coz of running almost empty , good example is HWH PUI and CBE duronto .
