Working with "T", our ex-college b-ball player.. teaching him how to hit a one-handed backhand. He had some bad habits due to lack of knowledge (never had any instruction before). His aptitude for athletics made it very easy for us to make great progress.

Clips in this vid are not 100% in chronological order.. they're set up to illustrate the errors and the fixes..

As mentioned in previous vids, it often helps a student to learn if an instructor moves the racquet through the swing path so they can feel what it feels like.

Many new players (and older ones) "PUSH" the ball on backhand side.. and we often see "LATE CONTACT POINT", and "LOW FINISH"...

The push is a more tentative swing and in extreme form the swing will start from the elbow. If the student is "willing" to step out of their comfort zone, then correcting this error is relatively easy (sometimes it takes some persuasion to get students to stop hitting their old way, and try to start swinging a different way).

Late contact point is the next most common error we see.. esp. for the one-handers because the correct contact point is a lot farther in front of your body then you might think (see "SHE CAN HIT A BALL" for the best illustration of this point).. a late contact point is compounded if the student runs into the ball (which, again is somewhat common).. to correct this, we need the student to be patient, wait for the ball, and try to reach out (farther forwards) when they hit the ball..

Low finish is really a minor problem and easily fixed.. just get the student to finish the swing a little higher.. all things the same, a higher finish adds height to the trajectory of the ball..

No cows were harmed in the making of this vid (it's just my voice in slo-mo)...
