Tool Rosetta Stoned guitar cover. Upon first listening to the album, this song was one of my least favorites. It wasn't until I started to learn to play it did I realize what a masterpiece it really is. And man, this song is long...when I first started putting covers up, never thought I'd get to this song. There's a reason why I've done many other's before it.

Of course, there's a few small errors, but I can live with 'em, so up it goes...and I can move on:). At 2:32 there shouldn't have been a double, timing error at 2:57, flub at 3:25, should have been a clean open lower D string at 6:02, missed the lower D again at 8:42, and the riff that starts at 9:42 should have been palm muted better so it doesn't sound like I'm doing pull off's at the end of the pattern. Seems like a lot of errors; but again, they are minor IMO, the song is long, and there were many more good parts than bad :)....I hope you agree.

Again, my guitar is way out front of the backing track so there isn't any mistaking me vs. the track. When I'm playing, from where I'm sitting, the volume levels sound different and I'm more in the mix; but with the Zoom Q3HD recording and it's placement, etc. it captures my amps over the sound of the PA I'm using for music playback...which works out nicely to put my sound out front for the cover.

In order to get decent feedback for the intro and solo, I've got a lot of boost from the MXR Micro Amp (2:00) switched on the whole song. This results in a louder overall volume for the song as well. With all the boost, most of the song is played with a minimum foot volume level. Only during the intro and from about 6:51 to 9:17 do I increase the volume with the foot pedal. At least that's how I did it with my gear/settings. I also noticed that Adam doesn't hang out at his pedal board for the volume pedal during much of the song.

As usual, after watching so many Tool live videos, I've tried to incorporate some bits that I like.

Going to re-do Sober next. Figured after this one, I need a "break". Sober was one of the first few I put up...I play it differently, prepare/practice differently, have better gear setup and tone (I think), and my recording gear is better than when I first did that song. So it should be...better:). And it should be up relatively quick.

  • Wow those flanger settings you told me work great! What do you set your Black nob to on your BB535? And do you use the volume boost?

  • @MrDrums8 Great, glad I could help. Usually I've got the black knob (Q knob?) at two clicks from full clockwise. For this song I did use the volume boost...you need it for the feedback.
