LOL That's why I love these early talkie musicals. You never know what to expect. One minute it's comedy, the next it is romance, the next a song, or a surreal dance number like this. :)

Looks like CineColor. The red/orange emulsion was on one side of the film and the blue/green on the other. It was hard to focus but gave surprisingly good color, not perfect but good. Splicing broken film was a task. Film cement wouldn't stick to the emulsion so both sides of the film had to be cleaned down to the film base before a splice would hold.

Great to watch although Lee herself wasn't happy with the number. She felt that the chorus was too close, they swallowed her routine up, and I see what she means.

Hollywood will never produce anything so splendid as this again, spectacular costumes and fanciful set designs, only the stage still attempts these feats but their budgets are not as flamboyant. I'm going to start spending more time digging out old films now, I can't even remember the last good film I saw that was mainstream anyway. Our current hugh celebrities are mostly idiots anyway, and get paid far too much for such poor quality performances.

I totally agree! Entertainment today is totally boring compared to the splendor of the 20's or 30's.
