Many folk ask why go to all the trouble to build a tunnel or vacuum-enhanced aquarium.
I quote here from "Bio-Elite".[link attached]
http://www.bio-elite.com/waterbridge.htm
"Was it worth the effort?

Yes. No let me repeat that: yes, yes and yes! Almost within 20 seconds of loading the bridge, my Siamese Fighter swam inside. He hesitated for a while then he returned into the original tank. He then became totally inquisitive and decided to enter again. This time he swam to the other side and "Hey Presto!", entered a brand new environment. From then on he spent 80% of his time in the water-bridge leaving the bridge only on occasions to breath air on the surface of the 2 tanks. He almost claimed the bridge for himself, like a troll!

On a regular basis we had pearl gouramis and other gouramis, plecs, angelfish, rainbowfish, red finned sharks, swords and tetras swimming through. Fish that did not enter were silver dollars, some loaches and certain types of sharks."

Ever watched fish swimming against a water pump outlet? Now they probably think the water contains particles of food. But some of those fish are normally quite placid bottom feeders. So is it a "work-out" routine or just a bit of fun?

I decided to join this 60cm cube tank to a 40cm x 30cm square tank.A few hours earlier I put some flake food in the small tank. When I returned in the evening these goldfish and plecos were still hunting for left-overs.
Fish are naturally inquisitive.A tunnel must add a new dimension to their mundane solitary aquarium existance.

Check-out Bio-Elite's site. This was before I refined new options for filling the tunnel.
But the description was enough to get me "fired-up" to see where this idea could lead.

  • Water finds its own level. So as long as the tops of the aquariums are about the same, all should be well.On the larger aquarium I have an overflow tube that runs through the base of the aquarium. The water is circulated from the sump via the small aquarium and returns via the large aquarium. If you use the small tank as a refuge m, you may have to take extra precautions for predatory fish.I forgot my catfish was slim enough to pass through the net I placed to allow small fish through.

  • I have that same swordtail but it won't breed with my other ones but probably because they are different type

  • Does the water level in the smaller aquarium naturally want to be higher than in the larger? I'm trying to make a refugium this way between a bigger aquarium and a smaller planted tank, and am wondering if I need to raise the smaller aquarium (it's slightly lower than the bigger one currently). Awesome vid btw, thumbs ^ :)

  • Unfortunately many people consider fish an animated ornament.I have even heard the argument that as fish are "cold-blooded" they are incapable of mammalian compassion and so do not warrant it from their human keepers.

But there are obviously people who know well what biological requirements are needed in order to keep the fish healthy but would hesitate to conjecture that a pet fish might be capable of having fun!

No question the fish appear to enjoy their venture from one aquarium to another.
