beautiful mash up!!!

@proudguy Cont'd: 'Notre amour', the story of one of his love relationships, is so smug and self-satisfied in tone that I have never been able to read much of it, though I've twice tried.
But the novel is beautiful and the film is beautiful, and stories like this do happen.

@proudguy I doubt THAT old. Anyway, it is made quite clear in the French dialogue, though not in the subtitles, that the character is a teenaged schoolboy, so you have to suspend your disbelief. The book is about two children.
Roger Peyrefitte, who wrote the book, was attracted only to young boys and had a lot of casual, promiscuous sex with them, gleefully sharing details of his exploits. He wrote books just to shock and infuriate people. He made a habit of 'outing' people against their will.

That is so weak, it is just silly. They get an actor who is at least 25, maybe 28 years old. Then somewhere along the line somebody says that the old guy is actually 15. Gimme a break. Even though the implication is that it will happen, the old guy doesn't molest the kid yet, so there is deny-ability there too.
It is so obviously contrived to support the idea that old guys should be allowed to molest kids. On the other hand, it is a sweet film, just contrived.

'only a couple years older', that should be, of course.
-
@proudguy But as I said, the older boy is supposed to be only 15. He's not an adult and he's only a couple years younger than his friend. In any case, the relationship, though intensely romantic, does not actually become sexual.

buddhivadin : Yes, the oldest boy is younger in the book, so it is a real sentimental story between two children (or a children and a young adolescent), not between a child and an adult. I've not watched the film yet, but with such a difference between the actors, the whole story must be ruined by the disturbing difference of age... a pity :-(

The man in the film appears to be at least 20 years old.

It is a very nice film, but... What is presented appears to be a relationship between an adult & a child that will become sexual. There are many adults who want legal sex with children. So I see a propaganda aspect to the film.
The message appears to be that if we try to prohibit gay sex between adults and kids, then we are hurting kids and causing suicides. But the opposite is true. Boys who have been molested tend to be the ones committing suicide, not those saved from molestation.
A beautiful and sad film. It had been better if the oldest boy was younger, cause he doesnt seem 14 years old. The double mulberry of the church, and his zeal to prohibit that such a pure feeling should develop with complete freedom. i agree with this kind of relationship. since the innocence

In the film, Georges is 14, just like in the book. Remember at the beginning of the film how his father says to him "You are a man now at 14".
