My newly modded Marshall. It has the Friedman Brown Eye, and Saturation switch. I'm playing, as usual, at lower volume, with the Power Brake set to lower the volume even more. Dave Friedman has the magic touch, giving the Marshall more gain and touch sensitivity, without changing the character of the amp, so it still sounds like a Plexi circuit Marshall! The SAT switch adds more gain. I tried to demo it but I'm not sure you can hear a difference using the iPhone video cam. I still have to mess with different preamp tubes of course, since I'm not a fan of the Sovtek and Chinese tubes Dave provided. Still, the amp cleans up beautifully, and does a great lower gain crunch too. I'll make more videos when I can.

  • Is the powerbrake engaged? If so...Why...if it was modded ? My 900 was modded and it is SUPPOSED to be as if on 10 at low volumes...just wondering is all...Sounds GREAT as hell though... thankx for replying .....Ray

  • @KennethRMullins Hey Ray, yeah, the power brake is a few steps down, to slightly lower the volume. And Dave's mod really does sound and feel like the amp is cranked at lower volumes. Magic, I tells ya!

  • I still own my '82 4104 (50wt.combo) & sounds like no other I've heard. I suspect it is the perfect platform for this stuff. Pricing would be of interest.

  • @AGK972 I don't have any clips of the plexi 100 watt head and PB-100 I owned. I use to crank it and without the PB-100 I couldn't go past 3 without air plugs...The PD-100 was guilty of two issues I had. It effected tone and it was also responsible for blowing a transformer...

This might not be an issue for you but you can't say I didn't warn you. It's also ironic Marshall no longer makes these power brakes. There are plenty of web sites that talk about this device, check Harmony Central.

The PB-100 will only mess up your tubes' life if you crank the amp. I use it with the master at half or less, to lower the volume to reasonable levels. Used that way, the Power Brake does no harm, and your tubes last fine. If you need the cranked power tube tone, at reasonable levels, you pay for it in tube life - power brake or not.

  • @QuietEthic I owned a power brake PB-100...Yes it effects tone and yes it saves your drivers but at a cost to haveing to replace your tubes 10x faster than never using it...

In my case the PB-100 was responsible for over heating and eventually failure to my transformer in my Plexi 100 watt...

I just noticed this video is a year old, I wonder if this head eventually had issues..My advice is don't use any attenuator, if the head is to loud sell it and buy a lower wattage head.

  • How much did you spend on the Brown Eyes mod ?

  • lose the power brake . Its choking your tone . You don't need it with Daves heads

  • @KennethRMullins the powerbrake's purpose isn't just for lowering volume though, it's also used to reduce the output of the head so you don't blow your speakers at cranked amp levels... essentially producing cranked tones at reasonable volumes. great for not blowing a relatively low OMS speaker cabinet and for studios!
