The Sydney University Madrigal Society performs its signature piece,
"Since first I saw your face" by English composer Thomas Ford (c.15801648). This recording is of the society's October 2008 concert, "From Court to Cottage", performed at the University of Sydney Holme Building Refectory. The choir is conducted by Edward Terry.

  • Beautiful! What appear to be "sad" songs were done in a light spirit and tongue-in-cheek. I believe that the tempo is correct. What fantastic diction by this group!

  • I have a feeling that this tempo might have something to do with John Leavitt's editorial suggestion of Quarter=88 in the Hal Leonard publication. All the opinions taken into consideration, however, there is something to be said about maintaining the original spirit of English madrigal. Not everything beautiful needs to be "milked."

  • ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! The tempo, pace and timing as well as the indentation and mixing of the chorus with the vocals is HORRIFIC!! A much better version of this song was sung by the Soprano Sarah Leonard from John Harle's Terror and Magnificence CD.

  • No, tempo is right! Melancholy does not mean mournful! This is a madrigal about the fleeting pleasures and losses of love. That dotting in the refrain doesn't work unless the speed is kept - otherwise it just becomes leaden.

  • penguinmama88, it's "Where Beauty Moves And Wit Delights", that's the title of the New World Rennaissance Band that has a wonderful version of this, I hope you can hear it soon! Good luck on your auditions!

  • @penguinmama88 understood, but the song is so lovely in the original tempo that I hope you get to hear it, and sing it the proper way, you will love it! The New World Renaissance Band does a wonderful job, if you can find their album, it's called "Where Beauty Lives And Wit Delights", I think, but don't quote me.

  • bad

  • Too fast but good diction. This sounds much better without sluggish instruments.

James Bowman and lute are the perfect combination

  • Terrible. Really terrible. Argh.

  • pianomags, thanks! I love this song almost above all other Renaissance songs, and the tempo chosen by the conductor is terrible...and penguinmama, yes of course you're right, you can get the idea if it's fast, but ah...if you heard it in the true tempo you would appreciate how beautiful it is! There is a wonderful group called the New World Renaissance Band who do the perfect version of this song, in fact the title of the album is "Where Beauty Moves and Wit Delights", a line from the song.!
