A Rex (.rx2) file is an audio file that contains up to 92 slices. Each slice can be triggered independently from a keyboard.

Rex files can be played in Propellerheads Reason using the Dr Rex player, dropped onto Pro Tools audio tracks, played via Digidesign's Structure sample player and can be played in a number of other ways. Check your software user guide for details on compatibility.

One advantage of a Rex file is that the tempo can be changed without the need for time stretching. If done incorrectly or if the source material is complicated, time stretching can introduce an unwanted bubbling effect. With a Rex file the sample slices are moved closer to each other when the tempo is increased and further from each other when the tempo is decreased.

In this video tutorial I'll show you how to make your own rex files using Propellerheads Recycle.

  • correct me if i'm wrong but all those features can also be done in reason right ?

this is just a dedicated software to the task for 100 dollars less right ?

  • @steflova2 you need to use recycle to chop up your audio and then create a rex or rx2 file which can then be played in Reason's Dr Rex. You can't create a rex/rx2 file from within Reason.

If you use rex/rx2 files alot then Recycle is a good investment.

  • How can I timestretch my audio files with recycle?

  • @simonduggal example, load your recycled sample into Dr Rex in Reason, transpose your controller keyboard down three octaves ... you can now play your sample as a melody!!! give it a go.. can't do this in DAW's. Another example is the filter and pan capabilities of Dr Rex .. you can use these in a way that you cannnot do instantly in DAW's

  • @bigdap100 Not everyone works in exactly the same way. Many Reason user still use recycle to in this way to create rex and rx2 files. You can do some very cool stuff with these files in Reason that you can't do in Logic, Pro Tools or Cubase. I'm a Pro Tools 9 user but occasionally I'll chop up a beat or sample in this way so that I can rewire Reason to Pro Tools for the some of these functions. (I'll post an example below as I'm about to run out of characters)...

  • waste of money at this point, this is an outdated way of doing things. Why would you go through the pains of doing this in an entirely different program separate from the host DAW.

  • Love that song

  • Thanks for the great video, you really saved me from smashing something out of annoyance. A true hero!
