What you say reminded me of Feuerbach, who said that human beings projected their own nature, then made a divine abstraction of this projection. This man-made abstraction then got a life of its own and started tyranizing over its creator - man - who became subservient to it. That's why god has attributes, characteristic to man, but raised to ultimante level.

Bingo! Intercessory prayer is, literally, wishful thinking. However, if contemplative prayer leads to folks beginning to think deeply, it may be helpful, even in an "ends justify the means" kind of way.
