NewsNetworkToday: 14 January 2010 - UNAMID: Darfur, Sudan - More than 7,000 students from all over Sudan showed their best today (Thursday) at the El-Fasher stadium as they concluded the 21st National School Competition. This two-week sportive event marked the first of its kind to be held in North Darfur.

Visiting the closing day of the event was Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir. He emphasized government efforts to achieve peace in the region by organizing the national sportive event.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Omar Hassan al-Bashir, President, Sudan:
It was an outstanding session, not because it took place in El-Fasher, Darfur, which all the world is talking about. But it was outstanding because it was well-prepared, well-organized with various activities and it gave all the participants all over the country an opportunity to unite the community.

To help ensure success of the event, the African Union United Nations Hybrid Mission (UNAMID) provided significant assistance to the Government of Sudan in the form of logistics, security and technical expertise.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Osman Mohamed Yousif Kibir, Governor, North Darfur:
We salute UNAMID which helped us and gave us all the support and the same thanks goes to UNICEF, which supported us to promote peace.

The Sudanese President also visited the town of El-Fasher to inaugurate the Western Salvation Highway project. The road which links El-Fasher to Um-Kadada will extend to 168 kilometers in the future. ........................................ ........................................
