@ykltc You just woke me up. I'm like duuu. Silver is a metel so it conductive correct. So it should have a certain amount of resistance depending of the size ie. 1oz 5oz 100oz each should have its own resistance finger. I have to test that but will need a control and a variable.

How are you heating these up? Silver is extremely reactive, chemically, and I can see that incomplete combustion of your heat source could skew the results. Also, how long do you heat them? Is it possible some of the skin oils and surface dirt may affect the outcome?

@QualitySilverBullion any dime quarter half or full dollar made before 1965 is 90% silver. the 1942-1945 nickels are 35% silver.
As for anything later then 1964, theres too many variations to list in one post. Some are silver after 1964 some arnt.

There's some good info near the end, ie buy from a reputable source. As for heating silver to somehow distinguish real from fake--this is not an accepted method, and you'll get wildly skewed results, depending on temperature, duration, atmosphere, and presence of other elements like sulfur. Take a look at old silver coins from the 1800s--they can be bright white, dark black, or any color in between. A SG test is far more accurate, and will detect silver-plated copper bullion.non-destructively.

Thanks! I had NO CLUE that 1 troy pound was only 12 troy ounces rather than 16 oz's like a normal pound. You had me sweating.. I just bought a few lbs. of "junk" silver coins at a good price, and had to go back and double check! Another thing to watch out for!
So are American Royal Mint things worth anything as collectibles? I found one in a closet and I want to eBay it or sell it somewhere... But I can't find anything on the American Royal Mint and what year it would be from. It looks like it's maybe from the 80s. (We inherited what is essentially a junk store of many things that are not worth much alone.)

@luxamnesiac I have seen them on ebay before, and if you decide to sell it there, I suggest you put on the listing exactly what is show on the bar. I can say how much to sell it for because I don't know how much silver is actually in them. sorry!

But your testing may be effective. but your testing damages the silver You should design a test whereby the silver you are testing does not get damaged.

@ykltc True. With the silver we get, we are testing to make sure it is pure silver. When we do find that it is pure, we melt it down. I can't say that this is the best way to test silver, but for our needs it is effective.
Thanks for the comment.

I always thought coin silver was 80%.
FeldwebelWolfenstool 1 year ago
@FeldwebelWolfenstool Pre-1965 US legal tender coinage is usually alloyed and contains a percentage of silver. That percentage is different depending on what type of coin it is (anywhere from 40%-90% silver). You might check around to verify that, but that is the little I know about "junk silver."
The medallions and bars shown in this video are not US coinage, besides the quarter shown with the hole in it.
