Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6D, focus speed, infinity to near to infinity on a D200. This is not a practical test since it's argueably rare to use the full focus throw. The limit focus test is more realistic, but this is included for completeness.

  • would this be a good choice for shooting baseball games from about 400 ft away?

  • In the day, it will be fine. 400mm on a DX is still a touch short for that, especially if you want real close-ups. You'd need a 500mm or 600mm for that.

  • this is a great lens but sadly its too slow

  • I've used it to shoot surfers with great success. It won't keep up with a footballer running straight at you, but you're likely shooting with something else for that purpose.

  • @a65cw just their consumer lines are made in Thailand. The prosumer and proffessional lines are made in Japan still

  • There is always another manufacturer to relay on , Nikon is no more the quality producers, just remember that most of nikon products are now a day made in Thailand for cheap production.

  • this lense should be boycot. Its 700 dollars more then a sigma 150-500 and NO AFS, Seriously needs replacing, its slow..

  • It's much faster than most non USM / HSM lenses, it easily beats almost any 70-300 lenses, but it does not compare to a 70-200 or a prime lens such as 400 f5.6 ...

  • slow

  • it's fast!
