The way foreigners learning english might learn the word 'playdough' is hearing the word every now and then, seeing what object is always talked about when that word is used, and then perhaps using a dictionary, and seeing the word in their own language. But it'd be quite far fetched to put "play" and "dough" together independently - especially, since 'play' can mean so many things, and 'dough' is not really even close to what 'playdough' really is. Toy-dough would be better.
