Graham Watson, Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group, answers a question about the climate change challenge.
"Well the European Union is doing a lot about climate change. We've acted to make sure that the European Union is prepared for the United Nations conference in Copenhagen in December. But I suspect we will have to be doing far more and if I were in charge I would be doing what I think a modern day John Maynard Keynes would do, I wouold tackle the climate change challenge and the economic challenge at the same time. If we were to build a high voltage direct current electricity grid all around the European Union and feed it with renewable energy - solar thermal power from the sun-rich area of Southern Europe, wind and wave and tidal power from North-Western Europe, geothermal and biomass from other parts of the continent - we could not only significantly save on energy bills, contribute to stopping the spread of global warming, but also at the same time put a lot of people back to work."
