That 50 miles range can also be extended with efficiency modifications. With low rolling resistance tires, aerodynamic modifications such as tapered bedcover and rear wheel skirts, synthetic transmission oil, 0 camber 0 caster 0 toe alignment, and machined brakes, range could perhaps be doubled. See the article "Free Fuel Riding on the Wind" on EV World, where aeromods improved highway fuel economy of a gas truck by 30%.

That whine sounded like a Curtis "C model" controller, which emits that frequency when the car is first starting up. Replace with a Zilla, DCP, Alltrax, or other controller and the whine at low speeds and from a stall will go away.
