@kiwicotton could I offer my interpretation? I think on the one hand its about returned soldiers grieving, but in a broader spectrum its about all of us "green children" learning the secrets of mother nature only to abuse them, and now yearning to reconnect with the world but perhaps no longer able to as the last verse suggests.

When I hear this song, I think about ancient Greek slaves for some reason. I think that no matter how miserable I might be, I'd still rather be alive than not. I don't know what the song is actually about at all, but that's just what I think of.

@kiwicotton I'd immediately say, subjective, as many of the Winterpills songs are. Context provided by the listener. They tend to write more metaphorical songs, though philip has been known to write more literally in his solo efforts.
