"Girls go back to the kitchen!" echoed through the gym of Tucson, Arizona Catalina Foothills High School after a gender-focused pep rally spun out of control.
The high school decided to participate in a 'Gender Week'. The idea was intended to promote friendly competition between the sexes and divide classes differently than the usual year of students. Other rallies in the past divided the students up by year i.e. freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. The following story is an extreme case of how gender roles are promoted and often condoned in secondary and collegiate classrooms and playing fields. Through observations, interviews and a student survey it is obvious that gender labels are present in education, and schools continue to promote differences between genders through expectations, in-class activities, extracurricular pursuits, and societal beliefs of assigned gender characteristics.
The pep rally at Catalina Foothills High School included "Gender Week." On Wednesday blue and pink day, when students donned blue if they were men or pink if they were women. On Tuesday "Macho Men sported "wife-beaters" (tight white tank tops), and on Girl Power Day women wore dresses Friday's plans included a Sadie Hawkins dance where students were encouraged to dress alike.
As if this display of obvious gender stereotypes was not enough the ultimate low point occurred during Wednesday's pep rally. The gymnasium was separated by gender and the groups competed to earn points. "Boys were tested on topics including fashion, while girls were quizzed about sports." Even the teachers participated, with men impersonating the Spice Girls and the females dressing like the members of *NSYNC. Eventually the rally turned ugly with both genders yelling out stereotypes; and, finally the men all turned their backs during the performance of the all-female color guard. Obviously the results of this ëGender Week" were catastrophic. Students cried and many made appointments with the counselor's office. At the same time parents were outraged. One parent reported: "My daughter felt degraded, I just feel like it was such a backsliding kind of thing to do."

our swim has taken first in state 9 years in a row
our soccer teams have both taken state in the past two years
"only 6% of them go on to a 4 year university"
we have a 95% graduation rate and the vast majority of graduating students attend 4 year universities.
why don't you educate yourself a little before you go making an ass of yourself on the internet.
