This was our 5th year for holding the All British Car Day in Ottawa; July 11, 2009. It was a rainy miserable day, but close to 80 participating cars showed up to enjoy the camaraderie. As one participant stated, it's the rainy show that people are going to remember. We had a great day and doing a twist off in a vintage Rolls Royce, certainly gave the people something to remember.

The Ottawa Land Rover club brought a ramp for a twist off demonstration. As a joke; I was called out about giving it a try with my 1961 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II. I thought yeah; I'll drive the car to the ramp; it'll be a good and entertaining photo op. When we positioned the car at the ramp and found that there was sufficient clearance I decided to give it a go. The car went to the 40" mark effortlessly and silently. I think this shocked quite a few people. People often look at the Rolls as being just a big boat of a luxury car, most people don't realize the amount quality, engineering and technology that make a Rolls Royce what it is. I recently read a quote; triple engineered and built like a tank. They truly are amazing cars.

  • Amazing

  • I suppose it is useful to twist the chassis ,stress all the suspension mountings find the hidden weakness, test the door popping resistance etc......but why risk possible damage for the show of it. I hate jacking my car up for a tyre change in an emergency ,let alone trying this for pleasure ! A very sporting owner this one ,and a very nice car!

  • I too wondered at the object of the exercise. Perhaps it was to test how far up the ramp the car would go before the rear wheel would slip. The lean was 40 degrees. Fully jacked with the car equipment would put it up beyond that I would think. What would have been interesting would be to demonstrate that even with that twist all the door would still function!. A nice example anyway!

  • Which sense does this make?

  • The best 4x2xFar!

  • @fillmore593 explain to me first, why not?

  • Can someone please explain the purpose of that little exercise?
