These ladies were no slouch as musicians, that's for sure. I wonder if they were any inspiration for Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopaters in "Some Like it Hot."

I think she's of Creole origin. There are alot of black Creoles that look like her...blonde-hair and all. Not uncommon....and they check "black". Carol Channing, the blonde actress in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" biological father was black according to autobiography.

I heard about her from Studio 360 too. I don't really see the booty they glowed about but she definitely has a very pretty face.

I just heard the story on NPR and looked this up. As a half black woman myself, I can clearly see the black in her. Sometimes in the winter, I get mistaken as white as well, but I'm half Asian and half Black. Whatever she claimed, she was talented. If she were up and coming today, perhaps things would be different. The story was great.

@simoneporter44 Actually she is part black. If you check the census records she is listed as Mulatto. The Native American blood story was more easily accepted in those times. I just heard a story on public radio (Studio 360) about her. In essence her skin was light enough for her to pass as white, and the dyed blond hair helped.

She was an listed on the U.S. census as a mulatto or negro depending on what year you look at.The stories pertaining to her Cherokee descent are cover stories so she could more easily pass for white.

Sounds a bit like Duke Ellington. Great band, and the leadress: Wow!

I asked myself again whether perhaps know the grandchildren and great-grandson of musicians on this and other Girl - bands clearer. If your grandmother has played here or in another girl - band, then you have every reason to be very proud of them!
They've all made a great job, unfortunately I do not know of a similar orchestra in our days...
