Every aspect of society in the 21st century holds challenges for India and other developing nations. Despite the strides made in industry, India is still home to an estimated one-third of the world's hungry and has a literate population of a mere 65.38%, with female literacy being as low as 54.28% as per the 2001 census. This is a situation that cannot be rectified by government efforts alone. The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been addressing the issue of hunger and its correlation with education for the last eight years. Its efforts have led to it becoming the largest charitable, school mid-day meal programme in the world, functioning in more than 7 states of INDIA (ANDHRA PRADESH( HYDERABAD, VISAKHAPATNAM), KARNATAKA, GUJARAT, RAJASTHAN, UTTARPRADESH, ORISSA, CHATTISGARH). Today Akshaya Patra is serving hygienic and nutritious meals to more than 1 million needy children everyday in government schools. Akshaya Patra sees each achievement as a spur to strive harder to bridge the gap between the hungry and the nourished, between the educated and those denied education.
