1997年グッドデザイン賞受賞
キットカーと呼ばれるプラモデルのように自分で組み立てることが可能な50ccクラスのマイクロカーシリーズの開発も手がけている。
ユーザーが組み立てるキットカーの販売については、会長の光岡進と社長の光岡章夫との間で意見の相違がある。現社長である章夫は、利益の上がらないキットカーの販売は取りやめるべきとしていた。一方、会長の進は、キットカーこそが光岡自動車の創業の意義であるとし、継続を主張していたが、結局進のほうが折れた。その後50ccのマイクロカー「K-3」を100台だけ限定生産し、2006年11月にキットカー「K-4」の受注を開始、限定220台で発売した。このキットカー「K-4」を最後に2サイクルエンジン搭載のミニカーは生産終了となった。なお「K-3」は発売後一週間で全て売り切れており、プレミアをつけて転売している店も存在する。

No heater, no weather protection, no radio, no passengers. You're better off on a motorcycle ~ at least you're up high enough to be seen in traffic. That "super sport" model is really awesome, isn't it? The front bumper makes me really confident I might (might) survive a collision with a dog or something. And it has an AIRFOIL??? Yeah, I really would need an airfoil on THAT.
I can just picture some big FUSO or HINO truck coming around a corner and not seeing me in that thing. WRONG IDEA, boys.
