  • Lionel Richie was the Johnny Mathis of the '80s. It doesn't hold up as well as the other albums nominated here (though All Night Long is a cool song that I still enjoy).

  • @chanpara Thank you, but pls. also show the presenters! We see far too little of Joni Mitchell. :-)

  • my dad had the purple rain album I like Lionel Richie and I haven't heard any of his albums but I am glad that he won the grammy from what I heard it's a good record

  • And during this time, he was cheating on his wife with a teen. Yet, I am happy for him although there may have been other albums that should have won.

  • Love what Dionne does when announced!

  • LMAO at Lionel's reaction when he hears he won Album of The Year

  • joni mitchell looks very beautiful here

  • 84 was an amazing year for music, which is why it ended up this way. It was a "flip a coin" year.

  • It was rumored in the industry that Purple Rain and Private Dancer split the vote and Can't Slow Down emerged. Both are far superior to Can't Slow Down and even Born in the USA would have been a better choice in retrospect. All strong nominees, and this is what happens when such a thing happens...

  • Ketren2: Purple rain had 5 top ten hits and far surpassed Ritchie. i wore that vinyl out in 84
