...just noticed the "-1" (thumbs down) about my "2-months-old" comment (as of oct 19 09). i'd like to know why--did i miss something about Sir Elton's remarks, or what??

like some, i have found Sir Elton John's extensive, thoughtful remarks on this matter to be very astute--i suggest that many ppl pay attention to what he's said.

Well said.

nobody's forcing gays to deny their attractions or raiding gay marriages in churches. gays can freely express their feelings of love in a church and get all the benefits that come with marriage through civil unions down the future. however, as soon as you step outside the private realm of RELIGIOUS marriage and enter into the public sphere of CIVIL marriage, you are subject to the law and public opinion or vote because civil marriage is about public policy.

@kenballer00 It is the legal side of marriage that is at issue. There are legal rights and legal privileges that go along with marriage, like Tenancy by the Entirety. TE is a survivorship-granting ownership that is not divested by transfer of a single owner's portion and is not collectible by creditors of only one owner. Other estate issues would be simpler and inheritance tax is applied without marriage. Individual liberty and legal equality should be valued over tyranny by the majority.

I disagree. Here's what I think: these people aren't out to "hurt" anyone. They believe that being gay is "wrong" and hurtful to gays. Similar to how many believe it is wrong to do drugs or be a prostitute. They are so convinced they are right(they have god on their side, remember) that they think it is proper--in an effort to help the gays--to legally ban gay behavior. In their minds, they're helping(society and the gays).
I think too many people are quick to demonize those with opposing views

esciguy79, thank you for being respectful in your disagreement. I certainly hope there are some people out there like you describe, but, to me, any domination attempted by one person over another is more of a human-object relationship than a human-human relationship.

RE: respect
I've found (through my own mistakes) that disrespect and dishonesty can really leave you vulnerable in thoughtful conversations.
RE: domination
I'm curious what your thoughts are on anti-prostitution laws. Do they look to "dominate" people who would by their own free will engage in prostitution?
If they do, does that make people who support anti-prostitution laws monsters solely interested in dominating?
If not, why is this type of control not domination like that in your video?

I would say the difference seems to be who a person is versus what a person does. Protecting gays from marriage is more like protecting women from voting. There is a difference in control between rules necessary for cohabitation and constructing rules to reduce freedom. Gambling, prostitution, and drugs are known to increase violent crime rates in the areas they exist, affecting public safety. Casinos are highly regulated where they are permitted primarily because of this correlation.
