@dylanTrill : Because it does not benefit us in any way. I'm in favor of private funding for people who care about such things, but as for the rest of us, we want our tax money to improve our lives, not sent across the universe to answer a few questions.

@Mufaso1000 Sure, there could be some crazy explanation to the existence of our universe and where its going that no human has ever heard or thought of. But the big bang theory has a lot of support and evidence behind it. So the question isnt mute.. And yes, as you said yourself these ideas are intriguing, so how is it a waste of time and funding to know how and where we come from and live?

@dylanTrill : Expanding into what? Does a big bang have to preclude an expansion? Couldn't something else besides a big bang cause the universe to expand? Quite intriguing indeed.

@Mufaso1000 Our universe is expanding, which is evidence of the big bang..

Since no one was there to record God saying "Let there be light," nor was there anyone to witness the Big Bang, the whole question of origins is mute. Both events happened so long ago that there is no evidence of either. It is a waste of time and funding to try to figure it all out.

If consciousness is the "being", then religion says that there is no beginning or end. However, if "being" refers to organisms made from particles and atoms, then there is a beginning and an end, wherein time is a cardinal factor that is relevant to mass.

maybe the universe just hasn't reached it's peak expansion rate yet, maybe it will slow it's expansion eventually in the future, allowing gravity to eventually pull it all back into a big crunch.
