  • @foxfairness One solution around taxing property value is to tax land in a flat manner (ie. $/m^2). First this encourages productive use of property because otherwise the owner is a net loss. This has environmental benefits (due to saving space and construction materials (no excess pipes and cables between buildings), and economic benefits due to economic activity in construction and operations on the property itself.

  • foxfairness: there is a century old movement to shift taxation to community created land/natural resource values for the purpose of establishing tax justice and sharing of values that belong to all of us because we all create those values. Keep your opinion, casually dismiss these ideas if you will but point me to some body of thought that validates your assertion. If you are merely asserting something based on unstudied opinion, why would you do that instead of asking a good question?

  • i question taxing land value becuase of the fact that it can be manipulated like the housing value.

  • foxcfairness: the point of taxing land value ( not improvements) is that the value of land is created 100% by the community as a whole thus taxing it merely takes back to community/society the value that it gives to land that is a free lunch to landowners and the root cause of land speculation which is the root cause of the current crash of "housing" values which is really the crash of land values since only land values can are bid up speculatively when "real estate" speculation takes place.

  • not land value, how about we tax the land occupied instead

  • Taxing what we don't want is a good idea. Taxing community created values, i.e. land and natural resource values, is part of this because right now community created values are captured only by those who own land and natural resources leaving all non-owners to pay taxes for public services all of which make land more valuable. All environmental abuse comes from people cashing in on, unearned by them, community created values. Tax derivatives, tax land value, untax earned incomes from labor.

  • good man.
