March 23, 2009. The first strong springtime low in southeastern South Dakota spun some fast-moving fronts today and provided some moody warm sector weather. Gusty surface winds, low-level moist stratocumulus clouds, and warm temps were the scene in Kansas City today.
Here's 30 minutes looking north out my apartment window within the heart of the warm sector of this low pressure system. Notice the southerly flow aloft. An active squall line formed later this evening ahead of the approaching cold front with the support of a jet core making its way around the east side of the trough aloft at the 500 millibar level. This low enjoyed excellent upper-level support from a strong closed low aloft almost directly over the surface low in southeastern South Dakota.
