@Intocable8306 actually this part of SD (eastern) has wet and dry spells (like any place else) But the lakes and sloughs depend on those spells. In the dry spells they dry up quite a bit (the sloughs you can actually walk across), but in wet spells, they fill up. This video must have been taken during a dryer spell.
Silver Lake is supposed to be larger but was mostly drained off from what information I learned not too long ago. One day I plan to visit all these sites, it would be so neat to see Silver Lake in person.
@SouthStreetStudio The lakes in eastern South Dakota are very dependent on the wet-dry cycle of the climate. Their size can vary quite a bit year to year. The year Laura described in By the Shores of Silver Lake was during a wet cycle and the lake was larger. LIWMS in De Smet sells a aerial photo postcard of the area showing the large lakes during another wet cycle in the 1980s.

I work about 1/2 a mile from this lake in the summer at the Ingalls Homestead, but yet, I've never been there. This summer, I think I will go there.

Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to the day when I get to visit all the places the Ingall's family lived and traveled through.
